For those of you who cannot or do not use flour or bread crumbs for cooking, as well as those who want to try a different type of coating to put on beef, chicken or fish, this is the recipe for you. It is quite simple but absolutely delicious. It can be used as a coating for fried or baked meats as well as vegetables such as mushrooms, zucchini, etc.

What is this delicious breading? It is none other than the French fried onions you buy in a can at your local grocery store.

How to:
Take 2 cups of the French fried onions and finely crush them in a plastic bag or grind them up into a powder using your food processor.

Pour ground French fried onions into a large plastic bag.

Beat 1 egg.

Coat meat or vegetables in egg wash then place into the plastic bag and shake until thoroughly coated.

You now have the option of frying, deep frying or baking the coated food but no matter what method you choose, it will be delicious.

If you are baking a good rule of thumb is 4 boneless chicken breasts takes approximately 20 minutes to bake at 400 degrees.

The French fried onions have zero sugar and no trans fats.

My favorite use of this breading is for chicken fried steak, fried chicken, most all fish and deep fried mushrooms. However, it can be used on almost anything you would coat with flour of bread crumbs so don’t limit yourself.

The only drawback to this recipe is once you try it, you’ll not ever want to go back to using the traditional bread or flour coatings.
