Unemployment is up, home prices are down, businesses are hurting and the people of Colorado are struggling to make ends meet. Does this concern the Governor or our liberal representatives? Apparently not! They now are proposing to tax all food items purchased for home consumption, a change from just a few months ago when Tax Ritter proposed to tax candy and soda only.
When I first heard of the proposal to tax candy, I wrote a blog asking “what’s next”. It didn’t take long to find out that all food items are now on their money grubbing hit list. The explanation for the candy and soda tax was twofold, the State wanted the money and the liberal run government felt that candy and soda was unhealthy so like cigarettes, they should be taxed. This is regressive and nannyish at best. Maybe they think that we are eating too well. If we can’t afford steak we will be purchasing cheap noodles and soup. Thus reducing calories and eliminating over eating and weight problems. These taxes have to be for our benefit; surely the State of Colorado wouldn’t tax us for any other reason. If it only saves one person from becoming obese then it has to be worth it.
For some reasons the liberals in this State feel that if it saves only one life then it’s worth putting a burden on all the rest. Whether it’s by passing a law or taxing the hell out of the citizens, our state government is going to make sure we follow their ideology no matter how restrictive, demeaning or costly it is.
A perfect example of this is our seat belt and helmet laws. I for one support wearing a seat belt, however I could care less if someone else decides not to. The State of Colorado decided the citizens were too stupid to make this decision on their own so they passed a law allowing the police to pull over and issue citations to anyone seen not wearing their seatbelts. On the other hand, the State of Colorado has no helmet law for motorcycle riders. Now getting involved in a minor traffic accident without a seat belt might get you hurt but chances are not seriously. Being knocked off or even falling off of a motorcycle and hitting your head on the pavement without a helmet in all likelihood is going to put you in the hospital or worse the morgue.
Who knows why our government only wants to protect people in cars and trucks but doesn’t give a damn about those on motorcycles. My thought is that some of our elected officials own and ride motorcycles and do not want to wear a helmet. What else could their reasoning be other than they see big revenue from drivers who don’t buckle up?
Bill Ritter recently announced that he would not be seeking re-election after his first term. He reasoning was that he wants to spend more time with his family. Yeah right, he knew he had no chance in hell of winning a second term. In his first term he has increased taxes on vehicle registration, cut property tax breaks for the elderly and didn’t do anything to stop the out of control State spending. On top of that Ritter was involved in getting a local ICE agent arrested for pointing out that when Ritter was a state prosecutor, he allowed illegal aliens charged with drug dealing to plea to a lesser charge of agriculture trespass. One of these illegals went free and committed a sexual assault on a child in California.
Now that Ritter is out of the running he can take the heat off of his liberal buddies by sticking the citizens with these added tax burdens and then leaving Dodge.
I am not an economist but I do know if you want to create jobs, get people to spend discretionary money and boost the economy, you don’t empty the tax payer’s wallets. When the people have more money they spend more and small business flourish, hire more employees and expand. The opposite happens when Government greed takes this money from people on necessities needed to survive.
The State of Colorado needs cut the feel good, state sponsored, social programs, reduce government spending and let the people keep more of their money so they will be able to purchase more. They need to quit acting like their constituents are children and need to be directed on how to live their life and what to do with their hard earned savings.
It’s time we take back our State and get rid of these tax and spend representatives who don’t care about the impact they have on their citizens lives but only care about bringing in added revenue on the backs of the consumers and tax payers. Using their words “if it only saves one persons livelihood then it’s worth it”.
