There are fans of football then there football fans. This story is
about two friends and a 1978 Denver Broncos preseason game.

I grew up in a small town in eastern Colorado along with my two
best friends, Craig and Don. Don and I were the same age while
Craig was two years older. We all graduated from the same high
school and lived together from 1976 thru 1978.

Now I’ll admit that we were not what you would call model citizens,
we partied hard; we downed substances that destroyed millions
of our brain cells; and we unwillingly convinced the citizens in our
town it would be a bad idea to let us date their daughters. In our
feeble defense, we grew up in an age where there was no cable TV,
no video games and in a town of only 2000 citizens, where there
wasn’t a lot of extracurricular activates other than keg parties
and the local bars. On the other hand, we did have sports and
we were sports fanatics. We played softball, basketball, touch
football, bowled and any other sports events that we could
compete in.

We stayed active playing sports, along with camping, fishing
and hunting except on Sundays during football season. We were
Denver Bronco fans through and through. We collected as much
Bronco paraphernalia as we could afford, wore our Bronco jerseys
with pride and most importantly we never missed a Bronco game
on TV. While most of the citizens in our town went to church on
Sundays, we were gathering at our house in preparation for the
game on TV. Bronco football was our religion.

We were excited about the start of the 1978 Broncos season.
The Broncos had gone to the Super Bowl the year before and
for the first time ever; my friends and I had tickets to a game.
The tickets happened to be to a preseason game against the
Vikings but this was OK by us. The Broncos always sold out every
game so just getting a chance to see them; even in preseason
was something special.
