It’s that time of year again, the time to decide what vegetables and herbs to plant and where to plant them. Unfortunately not everyone has a big enough backyard (or even a back yard) that allows for enough space to till the ground and grow those fresh vegetables we all have been craving since winter. There is an answer to this dilemma, its called container gardening. If you have a place where the sun shines, and you can sit a bucket or bushel basket, trash can or anything that will hold soil then you can grow a garden.
For single stem vegetables such as tomatoes or peppers, a single container such as a pot, plastic bucket or garbage can works just fine. (There is also cucumber plants that bush instead on vine that are great for this type of gardening and the single container works for them as well).
If you want to grow herbs, root vegetables such as carrots & radishes, or leafy vegetables such as lettuce then the long plastic storage containers or planters work great.
The first thing you need to do is poke or drill some holes in the bottom of the container to let the excess water out. If the soil gets saturated with water and there is no way for it to drain, then you risk the plants getting root rot and dying, which would totally ruin all your fun. Fill the containers with a mixture of peat moss, leaves (optional), light soil and a little light gravel.
That’s it! Just add water, your plants or seeds and you are ready to sit back and watch your hard work bare fruit. Or should I say bare vegetables. One last thing, you do not need to ad fertilizer to the soil at first. Wait two weeks for the plants you transplanted or two weeks after your seedlings have started to grow before the first fertilization. For tomatoes and large plants fertilize every week after. For the smaller plants once every other week should be fine.
